A granulated ammonium nitrate fertilizer is made by cooling an ammonium nitrate solution proceeding from the apparatus in which it is produced, preferably to a temperature at which it partially crystallizes, and conveying it to a kneading apparatus in which it is admixed with a finely crushed inert substance or substances, e.g. calcium carbonate, tricalcium phosphate, slag, clay and p phosphatic chalk. The ammonium nitrate solution may be cooled by means of a water cooled rotating cylinder dipping into the ammonium nitrate solution which is deposited as a film and partially crystallizes on the cylinder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of potassium and sodium carbonates as inert diluents. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
