612,219. Detecting, indicating and locating faults. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. May 20, 1946, No. 15154. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1943. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (a)] In the testing of high-power switches by means which simulate a high-power supply, a L.T. source of high current 1 is connected in series with the switch 7 under test, over the secondary of a step-up transformer 8 supplying the high-voltage element of the test power. With 7 open, the full voltage of 1 and 8 is in series across its terminals, but when, in closing, an arc passes between its contacts, current-flow in a resistance 9 causes an arc between electrodes 4, 5 which is blown by air from jet 12 on to an electrode 3 and maintained by source 1, so short-circuiting the secondary of 8 whilst permitting full current-flow to the switch.
