Abstract

611,833. Combination locks. GASPAR, L. May 10, 1946, No. 14130. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1942. [Class 44] . The bolt 1 of a combination lock has a number of apertures 3 each comprising two circular openings 3a, 3b connected by a slot 4. The lock comprises a number of rotatable sleeves 14 extending transversely through the apertures 3 capable of actuation from both sides of the lock and each carrying a looking cam member 17 which must be turned to a horizontal position to allow retraction of the bolt. A code mechanism is mounted on each sleeve which comprises a detent cam 19, Fig. 6, for finding a zero position ; a wheel 23, Fig. 7, having recesses 24 for producing clicks by engagement with spring-loaded cams 25, and a graduated disc 29, Fig. 8, keyed to the sleeve 14 and having notches 28 in one of which is inserted a rod 27 on the wheel 23 whereby the combination may be changed. Bell crank levers 31 are pivoted to the lock casing, one arm 31a of each being adapted to engage, by its own weight notches 34 in the bolt to retain it against retraction until the other arm is displaced by the locking cam 17. The bell-crank levers do not engage the bolt until it is fully shot, a supplementary forward displacement being allowed by making the back holes 3b somewhat oval in shape. The bolt may be actuated by a rack 6 and pinion 7 or by a sliding knob.
