Abstract

The solvent and shrinkage resistance of stretched filaments, yarns and fabrics made therefrom of a copolymer of a vinyl halide and acrylonitrile are improved by subjecting the textile materials, while under tension, to a dry heat at a temperature between 120 DEG and 175 DEG C. for a period of from 1 minute to 48 hours. To maintain the materials under tension during the heating operation, a bonding agent, e.g. a water-soluble cellulose ether, a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, an aqueous suspension of bentonite or a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate is previously applied to the materials to temporarily bond the stretched yarn or fabric to a rigid surface, e.g. a bobbin, or to bond the threads of a yarn cake into a rigid mass. The bonding agent is removed, after the heat treatment, by washing. Numerous examples are given. Specifications 513,327, 513,354 and 593,292 are referred to.
