Abstract

611,444. Winding yarn. ABBEY. A. (Universal Winding Co.). April 29, 1946, No. 12907. [Class 120(ii)] A yarn-winding machine comprises a plurality of winding spindles arranged to the form of a closed figure, means for travel in succession along a course having rotating the spindles during their travel and yarn-traversing means common to all of the several spindles for traversing yarn in the direction of the length of the spindles as they rotate to wind bobbins thereon, the yarn traversing means being operative by the travel of the spindles to effect relative displacement between the traversing means and the spindles in the direction of their length in order progressively to advance the zone of traverse of the yarn in the direction of the longitudinal axes of the bobbins. Each bobbin &c. b is supported by a spindle 40, the yarn end being gripped in a recess 42, a spring- urged stub-spindle 75, carried by an arm 70 adjustably attached to a rod 68 secured to a sleeve 58, supporting the tip of each bobbin. The spindles are rotated about a vertical axis by worm and worm wheel gearing 47, 162 driven from a gear train actuated by an electric motor 130 and belt 133. This motor, through the shaft 122, also drives each spindle by a common belt 170 and also the thread traverse cam 105 through the belt 118 and shaft 110. As the spindle-carrier 50 rotates about its vertical axis, rollers 65, attached to the sleeves 58, move along the top cam surface of a cylindrical track 20 to raise and lower the spindles which are splined to their driving pulleys 43. At the position between the runs of the belt 170, Fig. 3, the pulleys 43 will leave the belt and cease to be driven. Doffing and donning of filled and empty bobbins here takes place and for this purpose the cam top 20 has a high spot 125 at this position The yarns are led to the spindles from supply packages arranged in tandem fashion and supported by rods 80 attached to the rotating spindle carrier. Each yarn passes through pigtail &c. guides and a gate tensioning device and is led across the helical face of the traverse cam 105 driven at a selected speed by the shaft 110. The motor 130 is provided with a reversing switch, for producing bobbins with a reverse wind, but in this latter case the bobbin carrier, which is always rotated in the same direction, is driven through another worm 164 manually moved into operative connection with the worm wheel 47, for this purpose.
