Abstract
A guanidine salt is obtained by heating ammonium thiocyanate, thiurea, or a mixture thereof to a temperature of 80-250 DEG C. in contact with an inorganic non-acidic compound having in its structure a sulphonamido (SONH2-) or sulphonimido (SO2NH-) grouping. Compounds specified are sulphamide, sulphimide, ammonium sulphamate, sodium or potassium sulphamate, ammonium imidodisulphonate. Products other than guanidine salts which may be obtained by altered conditions are biguanide, melamine, melam, melem, melon, ammeline, ammelide, thioammeline and thioammelide. The reaction product contains elemental sulphur, and may be used directly as a fertilizer, or worked up for the guanidine salt by leaching with water and treatment with alkali earth oxides or hydroxides. Examples describe (1) the reaction of ammonium sulphamate with ammonium thiocyanate or with thiourea and the reaction of ammonium thiocyanate with (2) sodium sulphamate, (3) ammonium imidodisulphonate and sulphamide.
