Abstract

A flux coating extruded on to a welding rod containing more than 50 per cent copper comprises one or more heavy metal carbonates, for example, of manganese, nickel, iron, or cobalt, one or more alkaline earth metals such as barium, strontium, or calcium, a reducing agent which may be aluminium, manganese, ferro-silicon, or ferro-manganese, and a binder such as waterglass together with cryolite or the like as a carrier and melting-point controller. A coating may comprise 15 to 30 per cent ferro-manganese and/or ferro-silicon, 10 to 40 per cent calcium carbonate, 10 to 40 per cent iron carbonate, and 15 to 40 per cent cryolite, dry and binder free. An electrode may comprise 84.5 per cent copper, .75 per cent tin, 2 per cent iron, 8.5 per cent aluminium, 1.25 per cent nickel and 3 per cent manganese.
