Abstract
611,088. Coated films. DUFAY-CHROMEX, Ltd., and EVANS, D. J. April 3, 1946, No. 10353. [Class 140] [Also in Group XX] A nitrocellulose film is coated with a solution of cellulose triacetate in a solvent mixture of methylene chloride and ethyl alcohol and the exposed surface of the triacetate layer is hydrolyzed just sufficiently to reduce its acetate content to that corresponding to mono- or di-acetate of cellulose without regenerating cellulose. In a preferred method the film is coated by flowing a solution of the triacetate in a mixture of methylene chloride, industrial alcohol and dichlorhydrin thereon, the coated film is dried, treated with alcoholic potash for 25 seconds, washed with dilute acetic acid and then with water and again dried. If desired the hydrolyzed surface may be given a final nitrocellulose coating and then treated with dyes for producing a filter.
