Abstract

611,023. Self-levelling apparatus. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and MEREDITH, F. W. June 6, 1944, No. 10894. [Class 113 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a system for automatically maintaining, in a predetermined plane, a body such as a platform in a moving craft, the body is supported in a set of three gimbal rings each pivoted about an axis normally in the predetermined plane, detectors sensitive to rate of rotation of the second and third (outer) rings respectively control motors to correct the first and second rings for such rotation, and means for rotating the third ring in response to relative angular displacement between the first and second rings correct that displacement. A platform 2 shown in plan view is stabilised in a horizontal position in an aircraft moving in the direction indicated at 1. Platform 2 is gimballed about a horizontal fore-and-aft axis 4 within a ring 3 gimballed about a horizontal athwartship axis 6 within a ring 5 gimballed in the aircraft about an axis 7 normally coaxial with axis 4. Rate of turn devices 11 and 12 of the type described in Specification 611,005, [Group XXXVIII], mounted on rings 3 and 5 respectively, give electrical outputs proportional to the rates of turn of the rings about axes 4 and 6 and respectively control motors 8 and 9 geared to axes 4 and 6 in the manner described in Specification 611,019, [Group XXXV], to stabilise platform 2 against roll and pitch. Electrical contacts (not shown) on rings 2 and 3 control a reversible motor 10, geared to axis 7 to maintain rings 2 and 3 in the same plane so that rate-of-turn devices 11 and 12 are unaffected by rotation of the aircraft about a vertical axis when carrying out a banked turn.
