Abstract

610,917. Rock drills. LANCHESTER, G. H., and STERLING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. April 9, 1946, No. 10907. [Class 85] A drill head consists of an internally cored housing 1 which is angularly bored as at 6 to receive three stub shafts which are held from downward displacement by a bolt 8, the shank of which engages grooves in two of the shafts and is threaded into a screwed aperture 11 in the third. The shafts are also rigidly positioned at the lower ends by squared shoulders 12 which engage with corresponding recesses 13 in the housing 1. The lower ends of the shafts are formed with curved backshields 14 and angled extensions 15, each of the latter carrying an angled stub axle 16. On the stub axles are formed races 19 and 21 for ball and roller bearings which support the hollow cutter cone 23 of substantially uniform thickness. In assembly, the cutter cone is heated and on expanding is pressed on to the stub axle, the expansion just allowing sufficient clearance for the cutter cone to pass over the balls 26. The bearings are sealed off by a ring 18. On cooling, the cutter cone is free to rotate but is firmly locked on the axle, a spigot 22 locating the cone. Drilling mud is fed from the internal bore through a channel 7 on each shaft to passages 31 and thence to the cutters. Any number of the tungsten carbide teethed cutters may be used.
