Abstract
610,819. Lubricating and cooling tools and work. STEVENS, A. H. (Niagara Blower Co.). June 20, 1945, No. 15690. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups XII, XIII and XXVIII] A cooling apparatus for use with a machine tool, such as a turret lathe or other cutting tool, wire drawer, welder or grinder, in the operation of which a cutting or coolant fluid is employed and dust, dirt or smudge is generated in the surrounding air, comprises a casing 15 mounted on a tank 16 containing water 17 which is evaporated to provide the cooling effect, a fan 25, a cooling coil 38, through which cooling fluid is circulated by pump 13, in the stream of air circulated by the fan, a device 50, 51 for distributing a stream of water over the cooling coil, a conduit 66 for smudge-laden air and a filter 65. The cutting fluid collecting in pan 12 is withdrawn by the pump 13 and forced through pipe 14 into the inlet header 40, from which it is discharged through the coil 38 and an outlet header into the machine tool 10. Smudge-laden air, drawn by fan 25 from the zone of operation, passes through duct 66, air filter 65 and inlet duct 21 into chamber 19a, around cooling coils 43, and under the vertical partition 18 into the air discharge duct 22. Frusto-conical pump-shell 50 draws water from tank 16 and discharges it against the frustoconical stationary baffle 51 which deflects the water downwards on the tubes 43. Some air is recirculated by thermostatically-controlled damper 54, and the water temperature is maintained by immersion heater 67 controlled by thermostat 68. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), the fan is of the centrifugal type mounted on a vertical shaft which also forms the shaft of the driving motor. Entrained water is separated from the air-stream before reaching the fan by an eliminator, e.g. of V-shaped plates.
