Abstract

A process for the manufacture of chemical substances produced by the growth of moulds on the surface of an aqueous nutrient medium comprises producing a layer of foam on the surface of the medium at or about the time of inoculation with the moulds. The foam may be produced by agitation or air blowing, optionally with the addition of a foaming agent such as a hydrolysis product of a protein such as casein in conjunction with oxidisable metallic salts such as ferrous sulphate; malt wort; or a water repellant clay made by treating china clay with an aqueous solution of the ammonium salt of a colophony-stearic acid-maleic acid modified glyceryl phthalate. In examples, the method is applied to the production of Penicillin by the growth of Penicillium notatum on a medium containing corn steep liquor, lactose, phenylacetic acid, boric acid, sodium nitrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, magnesium sulphate, manganese sulphate, ferrous sulphate, and zinc sulphate; and Viridin from the growth of Trichoderma viride; Glutinosin from Metarrhizium glutinosum; and Helvolic acid from Aspergillus fumigatus mut. helvola.
