Abstract
Penicillin is produced in increased yield by culturing a penicillin-producing mould, e.g. P. notatum or P. chrysogenum in a nutrient medium under deep culture conditions, characterized in that the nutrient medium contains a water-soluble salt of a polythionic acid in concentrations sufficient to produce this increased yield but insufficient to inhibit fermentation. The polythionic acids are dithionic, trithionic, tetrathionic and pentathionic acids which are used in the form of their water-soluble salts, e.g. sodium, potassium, magnesium and sodium salts. Sodium tetrathionate is used in quantities of 0.025 to 0.6 and preferably 0.1%. The polythionate is added to the nutrient medium prior to sterilization and inoculation. The medium contains water, nutrient salts, a carbohydrate such as lactose, corn steep solids and a precursor such as phenylacetic acid, phenylacetamide and beta phenylethylamine.
