Abstract

610,458. Mixing apparatus. CANDY. F. P., and THOMAS, W. D. J. April 6, 1946, No. 10650. [Class 86] Apparatus for mixing flowing liquids by free vortex circulation, comprises an inlet pipe 1 for one liquid divided into two unequal branches 2, 3. A second liquid may be introduced intermittently through a pipe 19 into the smaller branch 3 which discharges tangentially into a compartment 4 of a cylindrical drum 9. An inwardly flowing vortex is formed which passes through an opening 15 into a compartment 5 to form an outwardly flowing vortex which passes through the opening 16 into the compartment 6. The remainder of the first liquid is discharged tangentially from the larger branch 2 and the flow continues as an inwardly flowing vortex passing through an opening 17 to a compartment 7 from which the mixture is discharged through a tangential outlet 18. A rod 11 passes through the openings 15, 17 to reduce the rate of flow at these points, and may be tubular for the introduction of a third liquid into the drum in the neighbourhood of the opening 15. In an alternative construction in which the pipe 1 is not divided, the drum comprises compartments 4, 5, only, and the mixture is discharged tangentially from the chamber 5.
