Abstract

610,039. Rivets. PHILLIPS, S. H. July 12, 1945, No. 17867. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1944. [Class 89 (i)] Non-metallic rivets for use in situations in which only one side of the work is accessible are made hollow for expansion by fluid such as air at a relatively low pressure after the rivet has been made plastic by heating to a temperature preferably below 400‹ F. A suitable synthetic thermoplastic material is methylmethacrylate. The thickness 22, Fig. 2, at the end of the rivet exceeds that of the wall 24b to ensure that the rivet expands after the manner shown. Air is applied by a nozzle from a pipe line at a pressure of from 25 to to 35 lbs. per square inch to deform and cool the heated rivet. The rivets may have projecting heads and may be reinforced by longitudinal wires embedded in the wall and splaying over into the head. When used for such work as securing a fabric sheet 48, Fig. 5, to a wooden backing 50 the rivet hole may be lined with a metal sleeve 52 and the rivet may have a conical metal tip 54 to facilitate insertion. The rivets may be employed for mounting metal parts on metal plates for which they must be electrically insulated; rivets being first secured in the plates and the parts then attached by screws tapped into the bores.
