Abstract

Aqueous alcohols and ketones which are only partially miscible with water and which form azeotropes therewith, e.g. butanol, amyl alcohol, dimethyl ethyl carbinol, and methylethylketone, are dehydrated by adding an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, miscible with the alcohol or ketone and having a boiling point at least 40 DEG C. above it but which will not form an azeotrope therewith, in an amount at least sufficient to cause separation of the mixture into two phases, separating the phases and subjecting the less aqueous phase to fractional distillation to produce a fraction consisting of the water-azeotrope of the alcohol or ketone, a higher boiling fraction consisting of the anhydrous alcohol or ketone, and a residue comprising the hydrocarbon. Suitable hydrocarbons are the xylenes, ethylbenzene, trimethylbenzenes, propyl and isopropybenzene, and diethylbenzenes. The aqueous phase may be subjected to distillation separately, and the water azeotrope of the alcohol or ketone thus obtained may be added to a fresh batch of starting material. The process may be carried out batchwise or in a continuous manner. In the latter case, three stills are used: one for distilling out the water azeotrope from the "oily" phase, another for separating anhydrous alcohol or ketone from hydrocarbon, and the third for the distillation of the aqueous phase. Specification 560,169 is referred to.
