Abstract

n-Propyl alcohol is separated from a mixture containing it and secondary butyl alcohol, by submitting the mixture to extractive distillation using diethyl benzene as auxiliary liquid, whereby n-propyl alcohol is obtained as overhead product, while the bottoms contain the secondary butyl alcohol in admixture with diethyl benzene. Between 4 to 10 volumes of diethyl benzene are fed to the fractionating column for each volume of alcohol mixture fed thereto; and a reflux ratio between 3 : 1 and 10 : 1 is employed. The process may be used for separating n-propyl alcohol from a crude fraction of the products obtained by oxidizing butane or a mixture of propane and butane. In an example a mixture containing 52 per cent by weight of n-propyl alcohol and 9 per cent by weight of secondary butyl alcohol, the remainder being substantially n- and isobutyl alcohols but also some acetal and carbonyl compounds, was fed continuously to the 5th plate from the base of a 30-plate column. A commercial mixture of the isomeric diethyl benzenes was fed to the 15th plate from the base of the column. The base and head of the column were maintained at 268 DEG and 208 DEG F respectively; and a reflux ratio of 5:1 was employed. The n-propyl alcohol withdrawn overhead contained only 1.27 per cent of secondary butyl alcohol, and amounted to 85.3 per cent of the n-propyl alcohol in the feed.
