[Class 36] In a machine for stripping insulation from the end of an electric conductor, the operation of a pair of jaws to grip, or release, the conductor, and of mechanism for sever. ing the insulation at a predetermined distance from the end of the con. ductor, as well as movement of the jaws to uncover the bared portion of the conductor, are effected by the movement in one direction of a single actuating - member. As shown, the end of the cable &c. 10 is fed up to an adjustable stop 22 between the (normally) open jaws 9 which are formed on levers 8, pivoted on a slide 2 and have exten. sions 11 normally constrained by springs 12 to hold the jaws open. Adjustable pins 21, carried by the arms 11 are arranged in the path of a knife-edge 20 on a pivoted lever 14 which is rocked to separate the pins 21 (and merely close the jaws 9) through linkage 17, 19 and a treadle or the like. The severing mechanism comprises a fixed cutter 23 and a movable cutter 24 carried by an arm 28 which is normally held in its raised position by means of a spring 31. The cutter 24 is lowered on to the cable by the engagement of the upper end 36 of the lever 14 with a roller 35 on an extension 34 of the arm 28. In the further movement of the lever 14, blocks 37 on the lever abut the pins 21, whereby the slide 2, with the jaws 9, and the gripped portion of the cable, are moved until the pins 21 enter pockets 39 on the lever 14. The pull of the springs 12 then releases the grip of the jaws 9 so that the cable may be withdrawn, the severed portion of insulation being withheld by the cutters. On release of the treadle, the lever 14, slide 2, jaws 9, and cutter 24 are returned to their starting positions by the springs 40, 4, 12 and 31 respectively.
