Abstract

609,673. Springs. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., KERSHAW, N. G., and MASON, R. March 20, 1946, No. 8631. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group X] A spring-controlled mechanism comprises a body to be moved in a predetermined path against variable resistance coupled to both ends of a spring so that as the body moves both ends of the spring automatically move in the same direction and relatively to each other. As shown, the shutter 1 is wound on the drum 2 which has a hollow hub 3 rotatably mounted on a coaxial shaft 4 supported on fixed bearings 5, and which is coupled to the shaft 4 by a tension spring 6 surrounding the shaft and secured at one end to the hub at 7 and at the other to the shaft. The shutter is guided in grooves 8 and is connected at the top end to a flexible connection 9 which passes over the pulley 10 and is secured to the pulley 11 rigidly mounted on the shaft 4. The shaft is first rotated relative to the hub 3 and locked by the pin 12 which is removed when the connections 9 are in place. As the blind is unwound, the spring exerts a large upward pull via the pulley 11 of constant small diameter, and a smaller downward pull via the drum of initially large diameter, but this downward pull increases as the drum diameter decreases, therefore the upward movement of the blind is assisted to a decreasing extent by the spring. The pulleys 11 may be replaced by coned or other shaped pulleys to provide any desired variation in the effect of the spring. The invention is applicable to horizontal shutters &c.
