[Class 29] Absorption apparatus.-In a vapour expulsion unit for apparatus of the continuous cycle inert gas type a weak liquor stand pipe 17 forming a vent for the liquid heat exchanger 11 has a pocket-like lower extension 22 welded to the heated part of the flue tube 10 to effect expulsion of refrigerant and the liquid space of the stand pipe communicates with an auxiliary pump pipe 23 for defrosting. The base of the pocket may be thermally separated from the flue and, due to the assymmetrical application of heat, a circulation and renewal of liquid in the pocket is caused. The stand pipe 17 opens into the vapour pipe 16 from the boiler tube and a pump pipe 19 welded to the flue tube pumps weak liquor from the bottom of the main boiler tube 15 to the top of the stand pipe. The auxiliary pump tube 23 with opens by a bell-shaped mouth 30 into the stand pipe 17 above the pocket, and passes upwardly, through a larger pipe 25 welded to the flue 10, to the evaporator or the pressure equalizing vessel. The pipe 25 is closed at the bottom and connected by a flexible pipe 26 to the defrosting container 27. During normal operation vapour bubbles caught in the bell 30 pass up the pipe 23 and condense, increasing the concentration in the pipe. To defrost, the container 27 is tilted to transfer the liquid heat transfer medium to the warm pipe 25 causing vaporization in the pipe 23 to pump the liquid therein to the evaporator until the heat transfer medium distils back into the container 27.
