[Class 14(i)] [Also in Group XVIII] In an apparatus for carbonating and dispensing liquids comprising a carbonator tank having inlets for water and carbon dioxide respectively, the tank houses a water distribution head from which one or more cloth-like carbonator curtains freely depend. Water is fed into the carbonating chamber 10 through a pipe 21, a check valve 22, a float-controlled valve 15, and a tube 24, and passes into an annular cooling chamber formed by cylinders 16, 17 and an annular bottom plate, not shown. The water is cooled by evaporator coils 19, and in order to obtain a temperature suitable for optimum carbonation the rate of inlet of water may be controlled by a manual valve 26. From the cooling chamber the water overflows through a pipe 25 into a series of annular troughs 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32, having distributing holes 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37, respectively, through which the water passes to flow as a film over curtains 12. The latter are formed of cloth made of continuous glass filament, stainless steel, linen, cotton or other woven material. Carbon dioxide is admitted to the carbonating chamber through an inlet tube 39. At the lower end of the curtains 12 the carbonated water accumulates until its volume is sufficient to raise a float 14 to close the valve 15. The carbonated liquid is withdrawn through a dispensing valve together with syrup stored in a tank 41 maintained cold by contact with the tank 10. A refrigerating unit is mounted in a lower compartment of the cabinet which supports the carbonating and dispensing units.
