[Class 14 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] An apparatus for aerating and cooling beverages comprises a chamber in which a liquid is carbonated by direct contact with solid carbon-dioxide, a second chamber in which a liquid is merely cooled by its association with a receptacle in which a stock of solid carbon-dioxide is stored, and a refrigerator chamber in which food, &c., is cooled by the gases evolved by the solid carbon-dioxide in the receptacle. A reservoir 1 enclosed in insulation 2 and a casing 3 is divided by a partition 16 into two chambers 17, 18. The carbonating chamber 17 is fitted with an adjustable blow-off valve 10, a manometer 11, and a device 5 in the form of a cock 7 with recess 8 whereby pieces of solid carbondioxide can be dropped into the chamber without opening the latter to atmosphere. The chamber 17 is charged with water by a pipe 13 connected to a water main 4, and has an overflow pipe 14 with cock 12 and a discharge pipe 15 controlled by a cock 22. The latter also separately controls a discharge pipe 21 from the cooling chamber 18, which is filled with water by a pipe 20 and has an airescape valve, not shown. Supported within the chamber 18 are a container 23 serving for the storage of a supply of solid carbon-dioxide and a cabinet 25 serving as a refrigerator for food, &c., the container and cabinet being provided with insulated doors and with connecting pipes 27 for the circulation of carbondioxide evaporating in the container. If the reservoir 1 is cylindrical, the chamber 18 and cabinet 25 may be arranged concentrically within it. The solid carbon-dioxide may be insulated in, and spaced from the bottom of, the container 23. In a modification, separate chambers 17, 18 are mounted in a reservoir 1 which also houses the refrigerator cabinet and is connected to a pair of containers for storing solid carbon-dioxide. Temperatureregulating devices may be provided, and also means for adding essences or the like in measured quantities to the chamber 17.
