[Classes 39(iii) and 126] In a combined electric fire and fender one or more heating elements 3 is/are normally enclosed within a casing 1, 2, but may be exposed by moving a part of the casing or drawn out from within the casing for use. In one example, Fig. 2, the element 3 is mounted with a reflector 5 in a lid 2 hinged at 6 for movement relative to a stationary part 1. Projections on the hinged part 2 engage with the tumbler 14 of a switch so that opening and closing of the casing turns the current on and off respectively. A spring or friction detent device may be provided to hold the casing open or the hinges themselves may be made sufficiently friction tight. The unit shown in Fig. 2 has two L-shaped fender sections attached to its ends, Fig. 5 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 6, 7 and 8 (not shown), the side wings of the fender embody fire units having the upper part hinged at the extreme ends of the fender wings. Alternatively, the whole front part 18 of the fender shown in Fig. 9 may be hinged about the side wings 20 so as to close down on the base plate 21 of the curb. In Figs. 10, 11 and 12 (not shown) a pair of units may be hinged to swing horizontally about the centre, the corners, or the extreme ends of the fender, each unit either having a hinged part to conceal the element, or fitting into a hollow shell forming the front and top walls of the fender. In a further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the elements are mounted in casings forming seats or pedestals at the ends of the fender and provided with hinged or sliding doors.
