Abstract

Nylon is delustred by treatment with a solution of antimony trichloride in hydrochloric acid and by addition while the nylon is still in contact with the solution of an aqueous liquor to precipitate antimony oxide upon the nylon. Excess hydrochloric acid may be neutralized and washed away. The treating solution may be conveniently prepared by dissolving antimony oxide in aqueous hydrochloric acid of such strength that the resulting solution has a residual acidity of less than 12 per cent of free hydrochloric acid. A table of amounts of antimony oxide soluble in 100 ccs. of hydrochloric acid of varying strengths is given. The preferred method of carrying out the process is to treat the nylon with the solution, remove excess by mangling, and then washing with water. The process is not applicable to water-soluble nylons. The time of treatment in the solution should be between 5 seconds and 5 minutes according to the amount of antimony trichloride in the solution. Pattern effects may be produced by printing or stencilling with a solution thickened with china clay or gum and then immersing in water. Nylon so treated will dye readily with vat dyes such as are used for cellulosic materials and the delustred effect is stable to laundry washing. In an example, a fabric of woven nylon is immersed in a solution of 10 g. of commercial antimony trichloride in 100 ccs. of 9 DEG Tw. hydrochloric acid for 1 minute, mangled and rinsed with cold water. In a further example, a nylon fabric is printed with an acid-resisting printing paste and treated in a solution containing 31 g. antimony oxide per 100 ccs. 35 DEG Tw. hydrochloric acid. It is passed through cold water and the resist removed forming a white lustrous pattern on a delustred white ground. On dyeing with Ciba Blue 2B, the delustred fabric is dyed blue, leaving a white lustrous pattern.
