Abstract

609,147. Heating liquids by electric resistances. WALLIS, R. G., THOMAS, F., and HOVIS, Ltd. March 6, 1946, No. 7049. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] An immersion heater for use in a lubricant reservoir, e.g. the sump of an internal combustion engine, comprises resistance helices 18 carried in cylindrical recesses in insulators 19, the assembly being inserted in a copper tube 14 which can be secured to the wall of the sump. The insulators 19 have their flat faces in contact, and are held together by'bolts 21 and securing straps 22 extending along their outer faces. The copper tube may be U-shaped in plan view, and then the heating element consists of a resistance wire threaded through " fish spine " type insulating heads. A thermostatic, e.g. bimetal, switch may be incorporated. Specification 343,029, [Group XXVII], is referred to.
