Abstract

608,999. Cloths stretched over backings. LANE, W. J. March 4, 1946, No. 6691. [Class 19] A cloth-holding mechanism comprises a pair of clamps a, a<SP>1</SP> each consisting of a pair of hinged jaws b, bl with a hinged member c between the clamps serving as a backing for the cloth, and a handle d for moving the device over the floor or other surface. The jaws may be plates or slabs of wood or metal and are hinged together at g, the inside jaw of each clamp being linked to the outside jaw of the other clamp by metal bars h, h<SP>1</SP> which are duplicated on the far side of the device. The backing member c consists of two plates or slabs which may be of metal hinged to each other as at e on a cross strip e<SP>1</SP> secured to the under side of a thrust plate d<SP>1</SP>. The opposite ends of the member c are hinged to the inside jaws of the clamps. In use the device is placed on the polishing cloth f spread out on the floor and on pressing the handle the jaws are brought together by the action of the linkage and the member c which operates as a toggle so that the cloth is gripped by the jaws and drawn taut over the extended backing member. The handle d may be mounted in a swivel socket on the plate d<SP>1</SP> and locking means may be provided for retaining the device in the closed position. According to the Provisional Specification the closed jaws may be locked in position by the thrust plate between the clamps.
