Abstract

608,986. Piezo-electric crystal mountings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., WELLS, G. M., and SUTTON, J. M. March 4, 1946, No. 6634. [Class 40 (v)] A method of mounting a quartz crystal plate that is required to vibrate in a thickness shear mode, comprises first coating small areas 2 of both major surfaces of the crystal with a metallic deposit to which metal parts can be attached, thereafter soldering thin strips 3 of metal to the surface of the crystal, then bending the free ends of the strips 3 around mounting wires 4 and soldering the free ends of strips 3 to the coated areas on the other major surface of the crystal. The strips 3 are also soldered to the wires 4. Electrode coatngs 5, 6 of gold, silver, aluminium or platinum, are applied by sputtering or evaporation, the thickness being subsequently increased to give the desired frequency of vibration. The element may be mounted in an evacuated tube with the mounting wires projecting from the ends. Or, the mounting wires may be fixed to the crystal corners at their ends, the intermediate portions of the wires being formed into loops for. attachment by screws to a base. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the mounting wires are attached to the crystal only at the mid-points of two opposite edges.
