608,934. Flexible cables and shafts. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS, Ltd., (formerly M.R.C., Ltd.), and PILE, S. May 19, 1943, No. 7945. [Classes 80 (i), 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] Relates to a flexible power transmission member of the type consisting of a cable adapted to transmit pull and push and torsion and having an inner core of a number of wires arranged in long-pitch formation on which is laid a single or multi-start helical layer or layers of wire from the outermost of which a single or multi-start. wire helix 12 projects for driving or driven engagement with a suitable part such as a gearwheel. According to the invention, any wire in the structure, other than the projecting wire 12 is replaced by a member, the exterior surface of which has projections and depressions of such character that the projections come within a circle, the diameter of which is equal to that of the single wire which the member replaces. Such member may comprise a single wire Ml of polygonal cross-section having a twist imparted thereto. The member may consist of two wires 9 of circular crosssection twisted together as at M. Alternatively, as shown at M<2>, the member may consist of a single-start helically arranged wire 11 laid around a central wire 10.
