Abstract

608,694. Calculating-machines ; cash registers. ALLEN-WALES ADDING MACHINE CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1946, No. 6133. Convention date, July 4, 1942. [Class 106 (i)] A calculating machine comprises item and grand totalizers, means for entering amounts simultaneously into both totalizers, a totaltaking member for clearing the primary totalizer and normally locked means operable when unlocked to shift a normally ineffective control element into an effective position in which, on operation of the total-taking member, the item and grand totalizers will be cleared simultaneously. General. Operation of a main shaft 30, Fig. 1, by hand or motor enters an item set on keys 4 into both totalizers and prints the item on a strip 13, Fig. 31, and, by the use of two ribbons or a carbon coating, on a wider underlying strip 14. Operation of a total-taking lever 22 prints, on both strips 13, 14, the item total and clears the item totalizer, after which the strip 13 may be torn off. Rotation of the normally locked means by a removable key followed by operation of the total-taking lever and main shaft clears both totalizers and prints the totals, the grand total being printed on the wide strip 14 only. Keyboard. Actuation of item and grand totalizers. Keys 4, Fig. 1, are connected to corresponding concealed key-stems 5 by means of bails 53, 58, 63, Fig. 12, so that each item is entered into the concealed grand totalizer 8 in addition to the item totalizer 7. Operation of the main shaft moves a bar 4, 6, Fig. 15, forwardly, thus allowing rack-carrying levers 35 and their associated stop-bars 38 to move under the action of a spring 40 until a tooth 47 on each stop-bar is engaged. by a depressed key-stem, and then returns the bar 46 and the actuating mechanism to the zero position. If no key in a column is depressed, the stop-bar 38 engages a zero stop 48, Figs. 7 and 15, depending from a lever 49 which normally engages in a notch in each key of a column, but is cammed aside by the depression of a key. All the totalizer wheels are mounted on a shaft 41, Fig. 15, carried by pivoted arms 42 so that the totalizer pinions may be disengaged from the rack-carrying levers 35 and engaged with fixed teeth 44 which prevent rotation of the number wheels. Key detents. The depression of one key 4 in a column cams aside a spring-loaded bar 74, Figs. 7 and 12, and releases any other depressed key, the bar 74 engaging in one of two notches in each key stem according to whether the key is depressed or not. Item total-taking. A total-taking lever 22, Figs. 1 and 33, is operated to clear the item totalizer and to print the total therein in a known manner. To permit this action, the zero stop levers 49 for the item totalizer only are carmned aside by fingers 80, Fig. 2, on a plate 78 which is pivotally mounted between the side frame members and rocked when the total-taking lever 22 is operated. Fingers 81 on the plate 78 co-operate with the longitudinal bars 74 in a similar manner to release any depressed keys. Simultaneous taking of grand and item totalizers. A lock 88, Fig. 2, may be operated by means of a removable key so as to rotate a cam surface 90 designed to move an auxiliary plate 82 longitudinally of the plate 78 on which it is slidably mounted. On the moved position, when the plates 78 and 82 are rocked by operation of the total-taking-lever 22, fingers 87 on the auxiliary plate 82 cam aside the zero stops of the grand totalizer and allow it to be cleared and its total to be printed on operation of the main shaft of the machine. The item totalizer is cleared simultaneously as above described. Impression mechanism. Vertically movable bars 18, Fig. 15, are arranged before a rotary platen 12, which drives a roller on which is wound the wide paper strip 14, and are operated by the levers 35 of the actuator mechanism through links 37, individual type members 17 being struck by spring-loaded hammers 19. A symbol type bar is also provided together with conventional ribbon feed and ribbon shift mechanisms, the latter causing the totals to be printed in red. Inhibition of the grand totalizer impression mechanism. The hammers 19 corresponding to the grand totalizer are normally interrupted by a flange of a plate 76, Figs. 15 and 33, carried by a spring-loaded bail 75, freely mounted on a shaft 28 and normally held in position by the engagement of an extension 76a of the plate with a sleeve on a shaft 23 which carries the total-taking lever 22. On operation of this lever, a cam 24 rotates an arm 27, secured to the shaft 28, and the bail 75 is lifted by a second arm 28b on the shaft. When an item total only is taken, the zero stops. 48 of the grand totalizer prevent any movement of their associated stop-bars 38 and so the corresponding type bars are not moved. In this case, although the bail 75 is lifted to release the hammers 19, a known mechanism, incorporated in the machine for preventing the printing of zeros to the left of the first figure, acts also to prevent the printing of zeros in the grand totalizer.
