[Class 106 (i)] In a machine of the key-set, independentlyoperated type a consecutive numbering mechanism is provided and is adapted to be operated by the totalizer engaging means when an amount has been entered, but is disabled automatically during an idle machine operation when no amount is set up and also during total-taking operations. As shown applied to a machine of the Ellis type as described in Specification 28253/08, [Class 106], a consecutive numbering counter constituted bv a series of wheels 9 with a known form of transfer mechanism comprising levers 10 and transfer teeth 12 is mounted on a shaft 8 and is provided with a lever 10 in the units denomination operatively connected by a link 16 and arm 15 to an operating lever 13. The movement of the lever 13 is controlled by a spring 17 upon the displacement of a link 4 that forms part of the mechanism effecting the engagement of the totalizer 3 with the differential actuating racks 1. The stroke of the lever 13 is limited by a fixed stop 18. The lever 13 is maintained in its normal position by a locking lever 19 engaging a stud 21 on a pivoted arm 22 that carries a transverse bar 27 co-operating with rollers 26 on the actuating racks which remain in the position illustrated during an operation if no amount has been entered up on the keyboard. On the contrary, when the racks move the rollers 26 raise the arm 22 to move the lever 19 from locking position. Actuation of the numbering mechanism is also prevented during total taking operations for which purpose a locking lever 29 is provided. Depression of the total key displaces a slide 28 having a pin 28a co-operating with a bevelled edge of the lever 29 which is thereby rocked to bring the shoulder 29b thereon into engagement with the lower end of the lever 13 to prevent its movement.
