600,446. Cash registers. GROSS, H., and GROSS, S. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 39. [Class 106 (i)] A cash register or other calculating machine comprises means whereby operation of one or more actuating keys releases corresponding levers, arranged front to rear of the machine, so that all released levers move under spring action to positions in which they can be engaged by a coupler device, and other means whereby mechanical power is available when all the keys are in unreleased position, said power actuating the coupler device when one or more keys are operated fully, so as to complete the movements of the released levers to actuate the calculating mechanism. The keys 20 are arranged in denominational banks, partial depression of a key causing a resilient presetting pawl 32 or 33 to hook over a shoulder on the depressed key. A hook 60 on each depressed key also releases a hook 59 on an associated lever 58 which rocks slightly under the action of a spring 63 to engage a hook 61 over the edge of a coupler bar 64. Full depression of a key rocks a trip bar 81 and levers 82 which rock a pawl 80 clockwise to release a cam track lever 70 which is then rocked clockwise about its pivot 71 by a strong spring 73. A cam slot 69 lifts a roller 68 to lift the coupler bar 64 so that the selected levers 58 perform a full counterclockwise movement with the bar 64, cams 62 on the levers actuating the appropriate denominations of a totalizer through gear sections 94. The lever 70 opens the drawer through a roller 72 and a cam slot 75. Opening the drawer lifts a roller 46 to rock levers 43 clockwise to hold the pre-setting pawls and therefore the keys against displacement. The subsequent closing of the drawer retensions the actuating spring 73, while an abutment 51 rocks a spring-pressed pawl 49 to rock the levers 43 counter-clockwise, T-shaped members 41, 42 on the levers 43 pulling the pre-setting pawls counter-clockwise to release all the keys. The spring-pressed pawl 49 finally engages an abutment 50 to hold the levers 43 just clear of the pre-setting pawls. A toothed segment 76, Fig. 3, and a spring-pressed pawl 77 form a full-stroke device. Keys depressed in error can be released by depressing a key 53 which rocks the levers 43 to withdraw the pre-setting pawls. The actuating spring 73 may be supplemented by or replaced by an electric motor controlled by a switch operated by the part 80 or -82. A lock 100 can be operated to lock the drawer by locking the lever 82, Fig. 5. Each bank of keys has a crowding ball or rod lock. Specification 600,449 is referred to.
