Printing totals. - In a machine of the independently operated type in which transfer is effected by imparting an additional step movement to the totalizer actuating racks, means are provided for rendering unnecessary the blank operation prior to taking a total. As shown applied to a Burroughs machine the total and sub-total keys are associated with latching means normally restraining a link from movement which link on depression of either key operates mechanism to move the totalizer pinions out of engagement with the actuating racks, to return the racks to normal position, to release the tripped transfer latches, and in timed relation therewith to start the motor. The racks 610, Figs. 5 and 7, are carried by arms 611 by the usual pin and slot connections and are provided with pins 651 co-operating with the usual transfer pawls 413. A cross shaft 13 is mounted in front of the racks 610 and has secured thereto arms 12, 20, and 30. The arm 12 is connected to a link 11 movable under the action of a spring 10 but normally retained in forward position by latch mechanism comprising an arm 41, Figs. 6 and 7, pivoted to the link and having an off-set lug 43 engaging a shoulder 44 on an arm of a bell-crank lever 45 pivoted on a frame plate 47. The upper arm of the bell-crank has an offset lug 48 positioned to engage a shoulder 49 on a link 50 which is connected at its forward end to an arm 53 on a cross shaft 54 carrying an arm 55 connected by a link 56 to a bell-crank lever 227 operated in the usual manner by the total or subtotal keys. When either key is depressed the link 50 is operated to rock the bell-crank 45 so as to release the link 11. When this occurs a one-way pawl 14 on the arm 12 rocks a lever 16 the lower end af which engages a stud 17 on the side member 18 of the totalizing-counter frame to move the pinions out of engagement. At the same time the arms 20, one of which is provided for each denomination, through the pin and slot connections 21, 22 rock pivoted members 24 so as to cause the projections 25 thereon to engagethe pins 651 of those actuator racks which have been displaced an additional step at transfer and force them back to normal position. The arm 30, at the same time, engages the end of a link 32 carried by arms 33 supporting a bail 34 and causes a movement of the bail to operate the transfer latches 411 and permit the pawls 413 to return to normal position. At the end of the total-taking operation the link is returned and the latch mechanism reset by means of a lever 62 engaging a pin 60 on the arm 41, the lever being rocked by a pin 63 on an oscillating arm connected to the operating mechanism. A forwardly projecting arm 65 on the arm 41 co-operates with a rectangular slot in the link 50 so as to lower it on release of the latch mechanism and raise it for engagement with the lug 48 on resetting. Operarting by motors.-The link 11 is provided with a pin 70 which, in timed relation with the latch release, is adapted to rock a bell-crank lever 71 an arm 73 of which is connected by a spring link 74 to the motor clutch operating arm 75.
