[Class 120(iii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXVIII] A device for joining the ends of threads of thermosplastic material comprises a first jig having two jig-clamps adapted to hold the two thread ends to be joined and controllably adjustable relative to one another to hold the ends in slightly spaced abutment while heat is applied to soften them, and to press the heat-softened ends together to form a joint, a second jig comprising a heating device, and guiding means to locate the jig-clamps relative to the heating device when the two jigs are assembled together. As shown, Fig. 1, the first jig comprises metal blocks 1, 3 which are adjustably spaced, block 3 being slidable on guide rods 2 against the action of springs 4 by a hand wheel 9 integral with a sleeve-nut 10 screwed onto a threaded rod 6. Movement of block 3 is limited in each direction to one turn of hand wheel 9, by stop nuts 7. 8. The threads to be joined are located in V-grooves 12 in transverse guide blocks 11 secured to blocks 1, 3, and are held in place by clamping plates 14 which pivot at 15 and are tightened down by nuts 21 screwing on studs 17 and provided with washers 20 and compression springs 19. The ends of the threads are cut off square, and each thread 25 is then secured in the appropriate V-groove 12 so that the ends just abut centrally in a hole formed by two semi-circular cuts 13 in the guides 11, the latter being separated by an amount corresponding, to half a turn of wheel 9 (see (a), Fig. 6). Guides 11 are then opened to their full separation so as to provide a small gap between the thread ends in which heated air can circulate (b), Fig. 6). For the actual jointing, the threadmounting is inverted and located on a heating jig, Fig. 9, comprising two plates 26. 36 of heat-resisting insulating material such as ceramic bolted to a housing for a transformer which supplies low voltage power to an electric heating element 28 of coiled resistance wire. The nut and bolt assemblies 17-21 fit into holes 34 in plates 26, 36, locating the thread-mounting jig so that the thread ends are positioned over the heating element 28. Current is switched on, and when the thread ends are soft, as judged by a thin wisp of smoke from the plastic material, wheel 9 is given a complete turn to drive the thread ends together (see Fig. 6(c) ), when the current is immediately switched off. Blocks 11 and clamping plates 14 are formed of good heatconducting metals, or may alternatively be of a non-conducting heat-insulating refractory material. Heating may alternatively be provided by radiation from above the joint, or by a jet of hot air or gas.
