Abstract
608,270. Uniting by fusion. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Feb. 19, 1946, No. 5130. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1945. [Class 83 (iv)] Bare wire electrodes in automatic arc-welding apparatus are enveloped with powder by conveying concentrically to the wire a powder with magnetically conductive components so that the magnetic field formed around the wire by the welding current produces a compact enveloping of the wire by the powder. A bare wire electrode 2 is fed through a nozzle 1 to which is fixed a hopper 3 for welding powder containing magnetic components, the powder passing through inlet openings 4 and outlet openings 5 and due to the magnetic field formed concentrically round the wire by the current flowing through the wire envelopes it in a more or less compact mass. The thickness of the layer of powder may be varied by adjusting the proportion of magnetic component. In order that the powder may leave the nozzle concentrically to the wire, a guide 6 provided with at least three radial ribs 7 is inserted in the bottom part 8 of the nozzle, the guide and part 8 being both exchangeable to suit the diameter of the wire. To ensure a regular flow of powder, an electrically or mechanically-operated vibration device is provided. This may consist of an alternating current magnet 9 fixed to the container 3 and having its magnetic circuit closed by the part 8. The excitation of the magnet and strength of the vibrations may be varied by an adjustable resistance 10.
