Abstract

<PICT:0607739/III/1> In an oil purifying plant for internal-combustion engines &c. wherein the lubricating oil is freed from water &c. by means of a centrifugal separator, a collecting vessel or tank is provided for collecting the heavier components discharged from the centrifuge and is adapted to return any oil, which may have collected therein, to the inlet side of the centrifuge or to an oil tank arranged in front of the centrifuge. The oil is therefore prevented from leaving the system, thus avoiding the draining of the engine's oil tank with the lubricating system which may occur when the water seal of the centrifugal separator disappears for any reason, the oil then discharging through the water outlet thereof. The tank for collecting the separated oil, in the embodiments described, is the same as the engine's oil tank, the systems being continuously operating. In one such embodiment, the impure oil from the lower part of the oil tank 1 is fed through a pipe 2 to the centrifuge 3, and the treated oil is returned through the outlet 4 and pipe 6 to the upper part of the oil tank 1. Water &c. and any oil discharged through the outlet 5 is collected in a vessel 7 where it stratifies, the oil overflowing through outlet 9 to the oil tank 1 and the water being periodically drained off through valve 8. In a modified embodiment, the valve 8 is automatically operated by a float which is influenced only by the heavier component. In a further modification, the bottom outlet is closed by a liquid seal of the heavier component formed by a dividing wall in the vessel 7 spaced from the bottom thereof.
