Abstract
607,102. Mixing-apparatus. BURNETT, A. C., and BURNETT & ROLFE, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2553. [Class 86] In apparatus for agitating liquids the shaft of a paddle or other agitator is mounted in a bearing in the wall of a vessel and is connected to its driving member by engagement between complementary screw threads on the shaft and driving member, respectively, which engagement tends to be tightened whilst the agitator is being driven. The agitator shaft 10, Fig. 1, is rotatably mounted in a bearing member 16 in the wall 11 of the vessel and a screw thread 17 at its outer end engages the internal screw thread of a driving member 18. A resilient ring 19 of rubber or similar material is bonded to the member 18 and to a ring 29 secured by screws to a sleeve 28. The latter is secured by interengaging screw threads to a sleeve 27 which carries a sprocket 25 driven by a chain, sprocket, and worm gearing from an electric motor mounted on the wall 11. During rotation of the agitator the screwthreaded connection between the member 18 and the shaft 10 tends to be tightened whilst the resilient ring 19 is stressed to urge the shaft 10 axially in an outward direction. The latter action assists in maintaining a' boss 36 on the shaft 10 in contact with a seating 37 at the end of the bearing member 16 to form a liquid-tight seal for the bearing. Alternative constructions are described in which the resilient ring 19 is replaced by a spring or by a Y-shaped resilient metal member.
