Abstract

<PICT:0606963/IV(a)/1> Container closures are made by forming tubing from a thermoplastic resin composition comprising a thermosetting material in the thermoplastic state, stretching the tubing transversely and severing it into bands, which may then be applied to a container and caused to shrink thereon by heating. The resin composition may consist of a thermosetting resin in the thermoplastic state, together with a thermoplastic resin or thermoplastic cellulose derivative, and plasticisers and latent catalysts for the thermosetting resin may be included. The thermosetting resins may be alkyd resins, drying-oil-modified alkyd resins, sulphonamidealdehyde resins, phenol-aldehyde resins, ureaaldehyde resins, etherified urea-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins, or mixtures of such resins. The thermoplastic resins may comprise polymers of vinyl acetate or chloride or of vinylidene chloride, after-chlorinated vinyl polymers, the polyvinyl formals, acetals and butyrals, polystyrene, resins formed from esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, copolymers of vinyl chloride and acetate, of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride, of vinyl halide and an acrylic acid derivative, or of a vinyl compound and styrol; or resins formed from dicarboxylic acids and diamines. The thermoplastic cellulose derivatives may include the organic solvent soluble cellulose esters or ethers such as cellulose acetate or butyrate, nitrocellulose, alkyl-, carboxy-alkyl and hydroxyalkyl cellulose ethers, and mixed ether-esters of cellulose. Latent catalysts for acid-curing thermosetting resins may include salts of chloracetic acid, ammonium salts of strong acids, ammonium thiocyanate and p-toluene sulphonic acid. For alkali-curing thermosetting resins sodium carbonate, ammonia, alkali sulphites, cupric hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide, pyridine, sodium cyanide, guanidine carbonate and pyridine dithiocarbamate may be used. As plasticisers dibutyl sebacate, dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, methyl cellosolve acetyl ricinoleate, thermoplastic alkyd resins, linseed oil, blown rapeseed oil and soy bean oil may be included. The tubing is made by extruding the resin composition, rendered fluid by heat or by the addition of a solvent which is subsequently evaporated, through the orifice 13 of an extrusion head 11 having a hollow central mandrel 17 through which water or compressed air may be introduced to expand the tubing 15, which is then flattened and cut into short lengths. Window band may be produced by dividing the die into quadrants and extruding an opaque composition through opposed quadrants.
