Abstract

1,003,243. Tubular polypropylene films. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Aug. 13, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 31974/63. Heading B5B. A biaxially oriented polypropylene film is made by extruding a polypropylene resin in the form of a molten tubular film at 200-275‹ C., advancing the extruded tubular film, at an ultimate rate of at least 10 times the rate of extrusion, over, but out of actual contact with, a cooling surface, the cooling surface consisting of at least two sections, the first being frustoconical with its narrow end facing the point of extrusion, and serving to cool the film to a temperature within its orientation temperature range, and a second section, continuous with the first, and 0À5 to 2 times the length of the first, being cylindrical and serving to cool the film to a setting temperature, the annular surface of the first section making an angle of 22-35 degrees with the annular surface of the second section; and expanding the tubular film to a diameter of at least 1À5 times its diameter as extruded while it is advanced over the cooling surface. The surface roughness of the cooling surface at the juncture between frustoconical and cylindrical sections is preferably 50-500 micro-inches. The ultimate advance rate of the film, and the amount its diameter is increased, are preferably correlated so that the properties of the film are the same in longitudinal and transverse directions. The polypropylene may be a polypropylene homopolymer, a copolymer in which polypropylene is a major component, or a mixture of such a propylene polymer with other polymers, e.g. polyethylene, wherein polypropylene is the major component. The polymer may contain dyes, pigments, fillers, plasticizers or slip agents. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) molten polypropylene is extruded from die 10 as a film 11 and advanced over a cooling mandrel 12 by pull roll set 13. The film is cooled by water circulated in sets of tubes 14A and 14B to 17A and 17B, located in the surface of the mandrel, and expanded by passing a gas via 19A into the mandrel, which is air-permeable, the amount of gas leaving at 19B controlling the inflation of the film. The expanded film is slit by blades 21. In Fig. 2, the tubular film is expanded by air admitted at 20A, forming a bubble between the face of the die and the pull rolls. Excess air is bled off at 20B. Both parts 12A and 12B of the mandrel are cooled by water circulated in pipes 18A and 18B. The film made according to the process is substantially of delta crystalline form, has an orientation ratio greater than 2, an orientation angle of 25-125 degrees and is heatsealable. Specifications 858,616, 882,155 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 868,388.
