Abstract

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, having a backing formed from a plasticized polyvinyl chloride composition, are produced by extruding the composition whilst hot through an annular die, preferably with air or other cooling means adjacent thereto to cool the extruded composition issuing from the die, inflating or blowing to form a tubular film of the set composition, drawing off and flattening the tube between take-up rollers, slitting in the longitudinal direction of the tube to change it from the tubular to sheet form, spreading a tie-coat and then a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition over one surface of the sheet, and then splitting the thus coated sheet into tapes of the required width, or winding the coated sheet into rolls and subsequently splitting the coated sheet into tapes. The plasticizers utilized in the polyvinyl chloride composition may have high non-migration properties and low volatility. When solid rubber is included in the composition, the rubber is banded on a rubber mill at an advanced temperature, and the polyvinyl chloride and other raw materials, premixed at room temperature, are gradually added to the banded rubber during the continuance of the milling, the milling is continued for a further period after the addition, the hot composition sheeted off, cooled and chipped to form particles of a size for feeding to the hopper or the like of the extruder. The pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes are stretchable in both the transverse and longitudinal directions. The blow ratio, i.e. tube or bubble diameter/die diameter, and take off speed, may be varied to vary the stretch in the transverse and longitudinal directions. Specific examples of plasticized polyvinyl chloride composition, tie coat and pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions are given.
