Abstract
1,214,656. Producing integral laminated layflat films. ZELLSTOFFFABRIK WALDHOF. 29 Dec., 1967 [31 Dec., 1966], No. 59021/67. Heading B5B. Tubular films formed by the captive bubble or blown tube melt extrusion process are converted into lay-flat films by passing the tubular film (which has half the wall thickness of the lay-flat film formed therefrom) through the nip of a pair of nip rolls while the tubular film is still hot enough to be tacky only on its inner surface, whereby the tubular film is flattened and the opposing walls of the flattened tubular film are pressed together with sufficient pressure to become bonded together to form an integral laminated lay-flat film. The film may be cooled either during or after passing between the nip rolls. The nip rolls may be positioned at such an angle to the annular die through which the tubular film is extruded that when the tubular film is passed between the nip rolls any thicker longitudinal areas or "lanes" of one of the walls of the flattened tube are superimposed on "lanes" of the opposite wall of the flattened tube which are thinner than the average thickness of the film wall. The extrusion head may be rotated about the extrusion axis, the nip roll assembly being stationary, or vice versa, whereby any given point on the extruded tubular film travels in a helical path from the extrusion die towards the nip rolls. The speed of rotation of the extrusion head or of the nip roll assembly for a given linear rate of extrusion of the tubular film may be selected so that the angle between the directions of longitudinal orientation of the two walls of the tube when they are superposed is 20 to 90 degrees. The film material is preferably a polyolefin such as polyethylene or polypropylene, or polyvinyl chloride or one of its copolymers. It may be a polyamide, a polystyrene or an acrylic copolymer. The film material may be extruded at 150 to 250 C. depending upon its nature and the rollers may be maintained at a constant temperature of 50 to 90 C.
