Abstract

606,392. Universal joints. HENDY IRON WORKS, J. Jan. 14, 1946, No. 1262. Convention date, June 7, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] In a universal joint of the kind having axial tongues 13 on one coupling member 11 engaging between resilient balls 8 mounted in segmental pockets 9 in an annular groove 5 in the other coupling member 3, the balls are prevented from moving axially in their pockets by forming the outer surface of the pockets with oppositely diverging axial tapers 16, 17 so that under centrifugal action the balls seek the centre of the pockets. As shown, the tongues 13 have enlarged ends 14 and abutment pins 15 to locate them axially with respect to the balls. The spider 11 is provided with a screwed cover plate 12 which may be removed to allow ejection of the balls by a rod inserted through holes 10 in the member 3, the joint remaining otherwise assembled. The inner surface of the pockets has a constant axial taper to facilitate manufacture.
