Abstract
606,254. Ordnance. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., ROBERTS, F. H., and SPAINK, J. H. ABBINK-. March 19, 1940, No. 5128. [Class 92 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] Relates to gun-elevating mechanism, including a power transmission of the follow-up or repeater type, and wherein relative angular displacement between two units, such as magslip units, results in the movement of a follow-up motor which in turn results in the elevation of the gun and also the cancellation of the displacement. According to the invention means are provided for increasing or decreasing the relative angular displacement beyond that initially set up by the predictor or other controlling mechanism. By this means an increased or decreased elevational movement of the gun must take place to cancel the relative angular displacement of the two units, thus compensating for factors such as varying muzzle velocities. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, relative displacements between the rotors of a transmitter 1 and a receiver 2 causes the rotation of a follow-up motor 3, which motor serves not only to elevate the gun 20 but by shafts 11, 10, and gearing 12 to reposition the rotor of the receiver 2. Such movement of the rotor is increased or decreased by bringing the desired one of a number of cams 5 into contact with a follower 6, the latter being geared as shown at 7, 8 to the rotor. In a modification a solid cam is employed and the motions of shaft 10 and quadrant 7 are combined through differential gearing. In another modification, Fig. 4, a third unit 16 is interposed as shown, its rotor 17 being connected with a follow-up motor 3 through the medium of cam mechanism. The arrangement is such that rotation of the rotor 17 effects the position of a rotor 1a associated with the amplifier 4, the position of the rotor depending on the position of the cam mechanism. Specifications 606,876, 606,877, [both in Group XXXVITI], and 625,244, [Group XXIX], are referred to.
