Abstract
605,865. Endless-belt conveyers. SELBY SHOE CO. July 10, 1944, No. 13146. Convention date, May 14, 1941. [Class 78 (i)] A process of manufacturing shoe uppers comprises preparing and collecting the parts making up the uppers, delivering the assembled parts to a first operator indicated on a work sheet initially assembled with the collected parts, indicating by means applied to the collected parts the next station to which they are to be despatched and finally shuttling the collected parts back and forth between stations, as indicated on the work sheet, by means of two conveyer belts travelling in different directions and arranged parallel to one another, linked by a traversing belt at right angles to the said belts and arranged so that both the upper and lower runs of the said belts and traversing belt are available for delivery of the parts in either direction. In the embodiment shown, the arrangement for shuttling the parts backwards and forwards comprises conveyers f, g connected by a conveyer h, the operators being located along the sides of the conveyers f, g and assigned a number corresponding to the particular operation which they perform. All the pieces necessary for the construction of a particular upper are assembled in a box at a table a and a slip is placed in each box showing the sequence of operations to be performed. The box is delivered manually to the operator first required to work on this particular upper, e.g. operator 2, who, having completed the operation, passes the box to, say, operator 3 by placing it on the top run of conveyer f. This operator removes it, performs his operation and then returns it to the belt for the next operator, placing it on the top or. bottom run of the conveyer depending on the position of this next operator. Where necessary, the boxes are transferred from conveyer f to conveyer g by the conveyer h, the boxes engaging members d at the transfer points. The destination of a box is clearly indicated by a coloured flag, each operator having a complete set of these flags.
