Separating or sorting by weighing.-A machine for separating or sorting plates and the like by weight comprises a balance beam having a plurality of travelling belts, a stack of receptacles arranged at the free end of the beam, a fixed platform above the stack of receptacles, a second balance beam in advance of the stack of receptacles, a second stack of receptacles in advance of the second beam, and power-driven means for feeding the plates through the machine. The plates 2 are fed through rotating rollers 3 onto a number of travelling belts 4 mounted on drums carried upon a weigh beam 7. The weigh beam is fulcrumed on a knife-edge 8 and carries balance weights 9 which may be adjustable. An adjustable weight 40 may also be provided upon the beam. As a plate is carried along by the belts 4 the weigh beam sinks in proportion to the weight and passes the plate through rotating receiving-rollers 11 onto one of the shelves 10. Plates lighter than those deposited on the upper shelf 10<a> pass onto a fixed platform 27 and are conveyed by transfer rollers 27x to a second weigh beam 23 operating in a similar manner to the weigh beam 7 so as to deliver the plates to shelves 26. A motor 12 is provided for driving the travelling belts, and the various feed, receiving and transfer rollers.
