605,523. Radio signalling. FERRANTI, Ltd., WOOD, H., DAVIES, R..H., and WHITEHEAD, J. R. Dec. 28, 1945, No. 35039. [Class 40 (v)] A responder for use with a pulsed interrogating signal comprises separate transmitting and super-regenerative receiving valves having a common oscillatory circuit connected between their control-grids and anodes, but with independent cathode circuits, with means for maintaining the sensitivity of the receiving valve substantially constant during operation. Interrogating pulses from aerial coil 5 are amplified super-regeneratively by valve combination 1, 7, rectified by diode 22 and amplified by pentode 27 for application to the pulse lengthening circuit 39, 41, associated with cathode follower 34. The lengthened positive pulse from network 39, 41 raises the cut-off bias on transmitting valve 15, causing it to oscillate violently and re-transmit a response signal. Use of separate cathode circuits enables the time constant for the receiving valve to be reduced to allow rapid recovery without impairing pulse lengthening at the transmitting valve, while the common tuned circuit combines with blocking capacitors 13, 13<1> to protect the transmitting valve from quench frequency oscillations. During intervals between reception, amplification of random fluctuations in valve stage 1 produce periods of oscillation which are also rectified by diode 22, and the quench frequency component is rejected in tuned circuit 60, 61. The random voltage component is rectified by diode 65 and smoothed by filter 74, 70, 76 for application as a negative bias on receiving valve 1. A change in sensitivity during sweeping of capacitor 6a results in a change in noise level which gives rise to a correcting bias on the receiver valve 1. Specification 591,965 is referred to.
