Abstract

In a method of manufacturing a permanent magnet of the kind used in electric metering devices, a loop casting of an alloy of coercivity greater than 200 oersteds is heated by a high frequency induction heating coil to a temperature above its Curie temperature allowed to cool in the presence of a circular magnetic field to below its Curie point and then has a radial portion removed to provide and air gap. The circular magnetic field may be obtained by disposing the casting on a conductor rod of circular section which is connected to a source of direct or alternating current, and the induction coil which may be one and a half times the length of the casting is arranged round both casting and conductor. The magnetic field produced by the conductor is maintained from the time of switching on the heating core current, when the loop casting has a temperature of 1200 DEG C., until the casting has a temperature of 500 DEG C. The magnetic alloy may have the following constituents C-.06 per cent, Ni-11.5 per cent, Al-8 per cent, Cu-4 per cent, Co-21 per cent, the remainder being iron.
