Abstract
A paste-like vulcanisable polymerised chlorobutadiene composition containing an organic solvent is applied to tanks of metal, concrete, &c., prior to covering such layer with acid-resisting bricks to form an acid-resistant lining. The paste-like composition may be applied direct to the tank interior, or to a primary coating of either chlorinated natural or synthetic rubber in an organic solvent (for metal tanks) or of a latex-cement composition (for concrete tanks). The paste-like composition contains the polymerised chlorobutadiene together with a vulcanising agent zinc oxide, litharge; as reinforcing agent carbon black, channel black, titanium dioxide; as accelerator piperidine pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, an aldehyde-amine condensation-product such as butyraldehyde-aniline, butyraldehyde-butylamine; as anti-oxidant phenyl alpha-naphthylamine; as peptising agent diphenyl-guanidine, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, tetraethylthiuram disulphide. A filler such as china clay, sulphur, rosin, pigments or softeners may also be present, while there may be more than one of each kind of component. The proportions of ingredients may be those customarily employed in vulcanisable polymerised chlorobutadiene mixes, but preferably such that the composition is self-vulcanising. The solvent may be either volatile xylene, toluene, benzene, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, coal tar naphtha, mesityl oxide, ethyl methyl ketone-and not exceed 30 per cent by weight of the polymerised chlorobutadiene; or substantially non-volatile, viz. a solvent-plasticiser particularly of the ester-type-tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate-and not exceed 30 per cent by weight of the plasticised composition; or both plasticiser and volatile solvent may be used in total amount equal to that used when employing a plasticer alone.
