Abstract

A floor covering is formed by applying to the floor at least one layer of a filler-containing but cementless composition based on an oil-resistant synthetic rubber by deposition from an aqueous dispersion, the water subsequently being allowed to evaporate at atmospheric temperature. Suitable rubbers are butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers and neoprene. Stabilizers, e.g. ammoniated casein and thickening and anti-frothing agents may be present. Additional constituents of the compositions may comprise latices of polyvinyl resins such as polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Fillers may consist of ground vulcanized rubber, asbestos, fine sand, barytes, granite or other stone dust, coconut shell granules or flour, anthophyllite, talc, mica, sawdust, leatherdust, cotton seed hulls and pigments, such as red or brown iron oxide, titanium dioxide or carbon black. Vulcanizers such as tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and dibenzthiazyl disulphide for the synthetic rubber may also be included. A priming layer may consist of hydraulic cement, or a natural or synthetic rubber composition or a mixture of these; the main coat consists of a synthetic rubber composition, and a top layer may consist of a synthetic rubber composition containing a pigment. The same synthetic rubber need not be used for all the coats. The priming layer may be as thick as required, e.g. from one eighth to one inch; the main layer may be about one eighth inch thick, and the top layer about one thirty-second inch thick. Two such thin top layers may be applied and a final sprayed coat of a vinyl-resin lacquer may be applied. Vulcanizers such as tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and dibenzthiazyl disulphide for the synthetic rubber may also be included. A priming layer may consist of hydraulic cement, or a natural or synthetic rubber composition or a mixture of these; the main coat consists of a synthetic rubber composition, and a top layer may consist of a synthetic rubber composition comtaining a pigment. The same synthetic rubber need not be used for all the coats. The priming layer may be as thick as required, e.g. from one-eighth to one inch; the main layer may be about one-eighth inch thick, and the top layer about one-thirty second inch thick. Two such thin top layers may be applied and a final sprayed coat of a vinyl-resin lacquer may be applied.
