Abstract
1281976 Anti-friction coating for rubber articles MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 6 Nov 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 52964/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Articles of natural or synthetic rubber are coated with antifriction and abhesive compositions comprising from 50 to 95 parts by weight of PTFE and from 50 to 5 parts by weight of an elastomeric copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with at least one second monomer selected from tetrafluoropropene (1, 3, 3, 3 or 2, 3, 3, 3) pentafluoropropene (1, 1, 3, 3, 3 or 1, 2, 3, 3, 3) and their mixtures with tetrafluoroethylene. The coating is preferably effected by mixing a concentrated PTFE latex with a latex of the copolymer containing a vulcanizing agent therefor, depositing at least one layer of the mixture onto the surface of the rubber article and drying and vulcanizing the coating, the vulcanization desirably being effected at a temperature lower than the sintering temperature of the PTFE. Subsequently the coating may be thermally treated in an oven at 330‹- 395‹C for a period of from 10 seconds to 20 minutes. Conventional additives may be added to either latex. The articles to be coated may be, for example, of natural rubber, butadienestyrene rubbers, nitrilic and acrylic rubbers, silicon and fluorinated elastomers, isomeric polybutadienes, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, polychloroprene, saturated ethylene-alphaolefin rubbers, unsaturated ethylene-alphaolefindiolefin rubbers and their mixtures.
