Abstract
604,932. Sectional buildings. NATIONAL STEEL CORPORATION. July 31, 1945, No. 19607. Convention date, June 17, 1944. [Classes 20(i) and 20(ii)] A readily erectable shelter has a series of arched ribs 30, Fig. 1, to which elongated sheets 41 are nailed lengthwise to form an outer wall sheathing and at the same time to act as bracing members. The sheets 41, preferably corrugated, are long enough to span and be fastened to three arched ribs. The arched ribs 30 are formed of two channels with corrugated webs placed back to back, as shown in Fig. 6, the space between them forming a nailing groove. The sides are covered by the sheets 41 up to a point on the curve of the arches where water would lie in the horizontal corrugations of the sheathing. The roof is formed of curved sheets 43, preferably corrugated lengthwise, disposed laterally as regards their length and nailed to purlines 33. The purlines, which extend for the entire length of the shelter and if necessary beyond it, are fastened to the arched ribs by self-threading screws, and have nailing grooves formed similarly to those shown in Fig. 6. A floor 27 is supported by joists 22, on the ends of which rest the channel members 25. The joists are in turn supported by sills 21. Interior wall panels 36, preferably of wall board, are arranged so that their lateral edges meet coincidentally with the nailing grooves of the arched ribs, to which they are secured by nailing strips which shape them to conform with the arches. The longitudinal edges of the panels are held together by splines 39, Fig. 11. Sections of insulation 40 are laid in place between the ribs on the outside of the panels 36. In erecting the shelter an end arched rib is raised into position and temporarily braced, its ends being secured to the channel members 25 by self-threading screws 32 as shown in Fig. 6. The other arched ribs are erected in sequence, their ends being secured to the channel members in the same manner, and the current spacing between them being ensured by trimmer members (seen at 35 in Fig. 14), i.e. two members, of length equal to the space required, attached perpendicularly to each arched rib. Instead of fastening the purlines 33 directly to the arched ribs 30, spacer elements 46, Fig. 14, may be interposed to raise the purlines above the ribs. By this means the roof structure, which is independent of the lower side walls, is raised, and ventilation thus increased. The roof sheathing 43 overhangs the wall sheathing 41. To prevent seepage of moisture into the shelter, flashing strips 47 and 48, with upturned and downturned flanges as shown, are provided. A screening element 49 may be added to the ventilating area. In this construction the interior wall panel 36, with the insulation 40, ends at the trimmer 35 and is nailed thereto by means of a nailing strip 50. Narrow sections of wall panel 36<1> are supported by the purlines and insulation 40 laid thereon. When the spacers 46 are not included and the purlines are screwed directly to the arched ribs it is still arranged for the roof sheathing to overhang the wall sheathing and for flashing strips with coating flanges to prevent seepage of moisture. The end of the shelter may be extended by lengthening the outer sills 21 and fastening thereto rib shoes 52. The additional arched rib necessary is connected to these shoes and held in place by extensions of the purlines. Additional roof sheathing members are supported on the purline extension and where desired additional wall sheathing members further enclose the extension.
